WHY SHOULD I STRETCH? Stretching will enable you to move more freely. It will create ease and suppleness in your body but most of all it will make you feel good. WHAT KINDS OF CONDITIONS CAN STRETCHING TREAT? Conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, neck pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, tension headache, pain in the hip, buttocks, calf, hamstrings, forearms, between the shoulder blades, pressure in the joints, can all be treated safely and effectively with correct stretching methods. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRETCHING AND YOGA? Yoga is a spiritual tradition which when practiced in its full form includes the disciplines of postures, breathing practices, meditation, cleansing techniques and observing particular codes of conduct. Stretching borrows heavily from the postures of yoga and is blended with a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology. Its aim is purely to create relaxation and flexibility in the body. HOW DOES STRETCHING WORK? Stretching works because it literally pulls tension out of muscles. Most people know the severe pain of a cramped muscle and are familiar with the natural reaction to stretch this pain away. Low level tension in muscles can cause low level pain, a dull ache or a stiff, sore feeling. Stretching is also the best method to relieve this discomfort. Stretching also realigns muscle fibres which benefits knots and scar tissue and increases circulation leading to the removal of pain producing toxins such as lactic acid. When muscles are loose and relaxed, pain often naturally subsides and free movement is restored. HOW QUICKLY WILL I GET RESULTS? It depends entirely on the circumstances of your situation. A stretch therapist will assess you and, if your pain is due primarily from tightness in the muscles, in many circumstances such as back pain and sciatica, relief can be instantaneous. DOES IT TAKE LONG TO BECOME FLEXIBLE? Depending on the individual it may take anything from weeks to years. But no matter who you are, as soon as you begin stretching your flexibility will increase.
